Paws of Promise – Animal Rescue
Nestled in Lamoille County, Paws of Promise. Founded by a small group of passionate volunteers, this grassroots organization focuses on finding forever homes for dogs in need — especially those that might otherwise be overlooked.
Whether it’s responding to urgent cases, helping with medical needs, or simply showing up when no one else will, Paws of Promise steps in with compassion and persistence. They also work closely with local animal control and community members to reunite lost dogs with their families, provide emergency boarding, and advocate for animal welfare in Vermont’s rural communities.

Vermont Disaster Animal Relief Team – Emergency Animal Preparedness
Vermont Disaster Animal Response Team (VDART) is a volunteer-driven organization founded in 2007 with the mission of strengthening Vermont’s ability to respond to animal needs during disasters. They provide critical resources and guidance ensuring animals are included in emergency planning and response. They offer planning resources for pet owners, towns, and facilities, they run volunteer training and activation protocols. When the historic July 2023 floods hit Vermont VDART’s Central Vermont chapter (CVDART Now known as VDART Northeast) sprang into action. On July 10, they were activated by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture to provide pet sheltering at a co‑located Red Cross site in Barre, offering 24/7 care for dozens of families and their pets.

Mitzvah Fund – Vet Care
The Mitzvah Fund is a Central Vermont nonprofit providing free, non-emergency veterinary care to pets of low-income seniors, veterans, disabled first responders, and unhoused neighbors. Using their mobile clinic “Baby Huey,” they offer surgeries, dental care, exams, and more at senior centers and community sites, ensuring animals receive vital treatment while helping owners keep their beloved companions healthy and at home. Partnering with organizations like the Central Vermont Council on Aging, Meals on Wheels and Community Animal Aid, they reduce barriers to access while also stepping in to rehome pets when an owner can no longer care for them. Their name, “mitzvah”—a kindness or worthy deed—perfectly reflects their mission of service, compassion, and community connection.

Community Animal Aid - Vet Care
Community Animal Aid is a free monthly wellness clinic for dogs and cats available to families who are homeless or receive public assistance, commonly located in Central Vermont Barre area. The wellness clinic is available once a month. Providing wellness exams, vaccines, minor treatment of wounds/illnesses/parasites - with no appointments necessary.

For the Love of Dogs VT - Dog Rescue
For the Love of Dogs Vermont (FLODVT) is a volunteer-run nonprofit. They rescue dogs from high‑kill shelters in the south and transport pups to New England for adoption. They have a thoughtful adoption process, complete with medical vetting, training support! Beyond placements, they support veterans and families facing financial hardship with essentials like food and veterinary care, and foster community awareness of spay/neuter importance and responsible dog ownership. Through transparency, compassion, and expertise, they give every dog and adopter a real shot at a lasting bond and companionship.
